More West Virginia Students Take Online Classes

For 10 years, Marshall students have had the opportunity to take classes online. Initially, however, not many took advantage of it. In the fall of 1999, for example, 306 students took 31 online classes. This year 2,976 Marshall students are enrolled in 176 online classes.

Each year, Marshall and WVU have experienced growth in online registrations. WVU officials, however, could not provide an approximate number of students taking online classes. At Marshall, there are two types of Internet classes: E-courses, or classes that are taught 100 percent online, and T-courses, or classes that are taught partly online. The same is true for WVU, but classes there are called either online or blended.

As College Admissions Decrease, More Students Attend Online Campuses

Newly released admissions figures show that colleges nationwide are accepting a lower percentage of students than in the past, leading more students to apply for online college degrees said the nation’s leading online university, Ashwood University.

Decreases in student acceptances appear to be a result of smaller college graduating classes, fewer slots at colleges for incoming freshman and more students in high school applying to a greater number of schools in order to increase their chances of college admission.
